Jews buried nine dead today, the victims of last night’s Arab ambush of a bus atop Mt. Carmel, near Haifa.
The ambuscade, in which eight Jewish special policemen were killed and a young woman fatally wounded, brought to 92 the July-August toll of Jewish dead. Seven Arabs were shot down by British troops which engaged the rebel band, bringing the arab death toll in the same period to an estimated 200.
The Jewish dead were: Miss Judith Mermelstein, who died of her wounds this morning; Dov Hoy Shreck, Moshe Blatt, Ascher Cahane, Mendel Glickberg, Izhak Buchbinder, Siegfried Cohen, Leon Osterman and Abraham Wolhaendler. All were between 20 and 30 years old and were natives of Germany. Austria and Hungary. Osterman’s wife, Ahuva, was seriously wounded. Hans Berger sustained slight wounds.
A British officer was killed and two privates wounded this morning when an army car was blown up by a land mine between Acre and Sakhnim, in northern Palestine.
