The Palestine Government announced today in the official gazette a prohibition on the exportation of foodstuffs. The order came after grave tension over the international crisis which yesterday caused a rush to markets to hoard provisions and to banks to make withdrawals. However, the new hope for an international accord arising from the Munich four-power conversations resulted in a relaxation of the tension today.
Despite the somewhat eased international situation, the Jewish National Council of Palestine cabled Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald that Palestine Jewry was firmly united with the Empire and ready for every cooperation and assistance. Financial and economic questions in connection with the international crisis were discussed by the Government chief secretary and treasurer with Moshe Shertok, head of the Jewish Agency’s political department, and Dr. Bernard Joseph, the Agency’s legal adviser.
One of the incidental effects of the crisis was an official announcement that telephone calls between Palestine and Czechoslovakia have been suspended.
