A comparatively satisfactory reply, taken to assume that Americans will not be expelled from Italy under the edict ordering expulsion of foreign Jews by March 12, has been made to the United States note of Oct. 5, it was understood today following a meeting between foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano and united states ambassador william Phillips.
The Foreign Minister was understood to have told Mr. Phillips that while his Government was unable to grant American Jews complete exemption from the anti-Jewish measure, it would nevertheless give each case broad, individual consideration. according to an estimate by the State Department at Washington, there are about 200 American Jews in Italy.
