Father Charles E. Coughlin, whose charges of Jewish influence in the Russian revolution have aroused widespread controversy, today defended his assertions and accused the American Jews of not cooperating in protesting persecution of Christians abroad although Christians were protesting oppression of Jews in Germany, in a statement dictated to the New York Post by telephone from Royal Oak, Mich. Heywood Broun, in his syndicated column published in the World-Telegram here, criticized newspapers for publishing Father Coughlin’s charges regarding the Jews before verifying them.
