In a speech last night warning of “intolerant ideologies” as a fifth horseman of the apocalypse, former President Herbert Hoover referred to treatment of the Jews in Germany as “the most hideous persecution.” “A score of democracies have sunk,” he said, “and armed dictatorships have risen in their place. They proclaim new ideologies of economic security to sanctify personal power. They live by terror and brutality. In Germany we have seen the most hideous persecution of the Jews. Now we see the persecution of the Christian faiths as well.”
