The New York Daily News today urged editorially the adoption of the Wagner bill to sanction admission of 10,000 refugee children into the United States and relaxation of immigration regulations to admit “as large a proportion of these people (refugees) as we can be fairly called upon to receive — if not a larger.”
Contrary to popular impression refugees help diminish unemployment and should on that account be admitted on a generous basis, Sir Norman Angell, noted pacifist and author, declares in an article in the current issue of Ken magazine. In support of his contention, Sir Norman cites the economic progress made by the United States and other countries during periods of free immigration and quotes the British Home Secretary, who said in the House of Commons recently that settlement of 11,000 German refugees in England had been the direct cause of providing 15,000 British workers with jobs. The article is entitled, “Why Not Take Refugees?”
Refugees from political, racial and religious persecution were among beneficiaries of $187,580 disbursed by the Golden Rule Foundation, it was announced by Charles V. Vickrey, president. The funds were administered by an aggregate of 254 carefully selected institutions and agencies, according to a booklet just issued by the Foundation.
