A total of 224 enterprises have been registered by Jews in Rome under the racial legislation which limits the size of enterprises Jews may own or direct, it was announced today.
Of the establishments registered, one was classed as important to the nation’s defense and three others as employing more than 100 persons. Under the law enacted Nov. 10, 1938, ownership of these four may not be retained by Jews. Jews will not be permitted to retain management of the remainder.
Disappointed at the failure of property registrations by Jews in Milan to reveal the anticipated tremendous sums, the Milan authorities have launched an investigation. Several Jews have been arrested, it was reported, for failure to register their property in accordance with the anti-Jewish decrees.
The Nov. 10 decrees provide that Jews may not own urban properties yielding more than 20,000 lire annually, or rural properties yielding more than 5,000 lire. They also forbid ownership in any enterprise deemed vital to the nation’s defense or employing more than 100 persons.
