The Nationalists are making strong efforts to convert the new movement for strengthening of the economic position of the Africanders into an anti-Jewish economic drive. Convocation of a national congress to discuss the economic situation of the Africanders, scheduled for October at Blomfontein, has given rise to widespread discussion. The Nationalists are campaigning on behalf of the Africander struggle against “the financial power of the Englishman, Jew and Indian.”
The Nationalists are seeking organization of Africanders to support only Africander businesses and are also trying to launch a cooperative movement that would eliminate Jews. A United Party spokesman, stressing the need for improving the position of the Africanders, warned, however, against efforts to conduct activities along narrow racial lines. He suggested that improvement would follow establishment of new industries in South Africa.
Commenting on recent developments of this character, the weekly Zionist Record points out that “sectional bias is often given in this country to undertakings which should bear a national character.” The periodical warns that “introduction of racial factors merely serves to divert attention from the real issues.” The Jewish Community is following developments with close attention in view of the large proportion of Jews engaged in commerde throughout the country.
