Ex-President Rafael L. Trujillo Molina of the Dominican republic, commander-in-chief of the Republic’s army, stated today that his country was willing to accept 500 Jewish refugee families, “without restrictions,” as the forerunner of further groups.
“My Government,” he said in a statement issued as he sailed on the Normandie, “will take as a first unit without restrictions 500 Jewish refugee families, divided into agricultural, industrial and professional groups, with a view to taking more.”
Nor commend on Gen. Trujillo’s statement was made at the office of President Roosevelt’ Advisory Committee on Refugees, which is now completing the draft of a report on refugee settlement possibilities in the Caribbean republic prepared by an experts’ commission.
