Reynolds News, organ of the cooperative movement, predicted today that Chancellor Hitler’s next surprise would be to declare amnesty for the persecuted Jews in order to impress foreign Jews, particularly American. The newspaper pointed out that in the last fortnight all Jewish doctors in Germany have been called to war services and many other Jews have been given well-paid posts.
Yellow-painted park benches in Berlin reserved for Jews have been repainted green and the lettering marking them for Jewish use has been removed, the Daily Mail reported today, quoting advices reaching the Hague. Signs reading “Jews Not Desired” which marked certain shops have also been removed, it was said. The Jewish Press Committee of Amsterdam suggested that these moves were made in order to provide “Jewish cannon fodder” in the event of war.
