More than 5,000 American Jews are seeking to enlist in the Canadian militia for possible service overseas, it was announced today by Defense Minister Ian Mackenzie.
Mr. MacKenzie said American citizens were ineligible for enlistment as the Militia Act stipulates that candidates must be British subjects. Mere taking of the allegiance oath does not qualify candidates for enlistment, he declared, adding that “no decision has been made to ‘turn Admiral Nelson’s blind eye’ in respect to the King’s regulations, which in the last war were honored in the breach rather than in observance.”
