Representatives of practically every Jewish organization and several civic groups in Greater New York will honor the memory of the late Louis Marshall tomorrow with a pilgrimage to his grave in Salem Fields Cemetery, Brooklyn, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death. Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. by Dr. Samuel G. Goldenson, rabbi of Temple Emanu-El.
Looked upon at his death ten years ago as the foremost American Jewish leader, the commemoration of Mr. Marshall’s “Yahrzeit” is being sponsored jointly by the American Jewish Committee, the Congregation Emanu-El of New York City and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. At the time of his death, Mr. Marshall was president of the American Jewish Committee and Temple Emanu-El and chairman of the board of directors of the Seminary.
Among the organizations that will have official representation at the pilgrimage are: The Central Conference of American Rabbis which will be represented by Rabbi Nathan Stern; the Association of the Bar of the City of New York to be represented by George Gordon Battle, Terrence J. McManus, and Philip W. Haberman Jr., the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City to be represented by Dr. Solomon Lowenstein and Dr. Maurice B. Hexter; B’nai B’rith to be represented by Louis Fabricant; the Jewish Theological Seminary of America to be represented by Provost Louis I. Finkelstein; the American Jewish Committee to be represented by Morris D. Waldman, executive secretary, and the entire staff that served under Mr. Marshall’s presidency; the Congregation Emanu-El by its president, Lewis L. Strauss, and its rabbis; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to be represented by Rev. John H. Johnson; the United Synagogue of America by its president, Louis J. Moss; and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America by its president, William Weiss.
Other organizations to be represented by official delegations are: Hadassah, the Jewish Board of Guardians, Independent Order Brith Abraham, League for Labor Palestine, Jewish Education Association, Aleph Zadik Aleph, Jewish Agricultural Society, Mizrachi Women’s Organization of America, Woman’s League of the United Synagogue, Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Congregation Emanu-El Men’s Club, and the American ORT Federation.
Mr. Marshall is survived by three sons, one of whom, James Marshall, is president of the New York City Board of Education.
