Strongly reinforced police patrols are on duty in the Jewish quarters of Brussels and Antwerp following attempts by Nazi agitators to create anti-Jewish disturbances. Organized demonstrations occurring simultaneously in both cities prompted the Mayor of Antwerp to issue a proclamation to the public to beware of “dark forces” and to announce that the police had been instructed to deal effectively with further attempts at demonstrations or disorders.
The press unanimously condemns the disorders, which it denounces as the work of “foreign provocateurs and those who allow themselves to be influenced by them.”
The Jewish Community of Brussels has telegraphed to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Defence a declaration that the foreign Jews in Belgium place themselves at the disposal of the Government. Thousands of Jewish refugees in the country have also signed a declaration volunteering for any services the Government would require them for. The “Jewish Home” in Brussels is registering foreign Jews who are prepared to service the country.
