Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists suffered a crushing defeat in the Silvertown by-election today which was to have been a trial of Mosley’s strength.

The Fascist candidate, Tom Moran, secured only 151 votes compared to 966 for Communist Harry Pollitt and 14,343 for the victorious Laborite J.H. Hollins. Both Moran and Pollitt, who campaigned on a stop-the-war issue, forfeited deposits of L150 each. Moran’s campaign was almost exclusively anti-Jewish.
