An article by Victor Weybright in the April issue of Survey Graphic, entitled “Sympathy Is Not Enough,” declares that contributions by Americans for relief abroad have so far been meager and “the future of the world may rest upon our capacity for compassion.”
“The first measure of that, today, is how generously we help those who need help most–the starving, homeless, friendless and ill war victims who but for the grace of God might be ourselves,” the article states. “Eventually the Government will be impelled to contribute in our behalf. Now we are judged by what we do, ourselves.” Weybright reports that American contributions for war victims in Europe and Asia totaled roughly $5,000,000 since last September.
