European Jewry today mourned the death of Dr. Cyrus Adler, who died in Philadelphia Sunday night at the age of 76. Among organizations which sent messages of condolence were the Alliance Israelite Universelle, the HIAS-ICA Emigration Association, the World Jewish Congress, the ORT-OZE Union and the Board of Deputies of British Jews, whose president, Prof. Selig Brodetsky, is now visiting Paris.
Excerpts from the messages follow:
Prof. Brodetsky: “Deeply grieved to learn of passing of Cyrus Adler, that distinguished figure in American Judaism, who measured all his actions by the highest standards of his religious faith…Those connected with him, as I was in the more direct tasks of the Jewish Agency and Hebrew University Board of Governors, will appreciate the great gap his death has left. He was not only a leader of American Jewry but outstanding figure of world Jewry. His death is particularly grievous at this time, especially in view of the great work to which he was called recently by the President of United States.”
Alliance Israelite: “With great emotion Alliance Israelite Universelle has learned of the death of Dr. Cyrus Adler. An exceptional personality who during a long career put in his full weight in all domains of human activity, his passing will particularly be felt in our turbulent epoch when Jewry has need of such guided.”
