The Governing Board of Jewish Education today named a committee to draft new proposals designed to strengthen the board’s educational and administrative functions.

Proposals previously submitted by the Director of Education were criticized in a resolution adopted by the board as tending to undermine the foundations of Jewish education.

The resolution said the director’s proposals would affect Palestine Jewry’s autonomy in educational affairs. It urged the Jewish Agency, the Jewish National Council (Vaad Leumi) and other institutions to defend Palestine Jewry’s rights in the field of education and self-determination in cultural and spiritual affairs.

“The Board of Education,” the resolution said, “regards the existence of the three systems now prevailing in Jewish education as the natural outcome of Palestine Jewry’s development.”
