The forthcoming Havana meeting of American republics will consider every phase of the world’s immense refugee problem, Secretary of State Cordell Hull predicted today. He indicated the republics would be asked to announce what aid they could render to alleviate the refugee situation.
Consideration of the refugee problems will be under Article IV of the first section of the agenda, calling for “consideration of the humanitarian activities which can be conducted in the American republics for the benefit of victims of the European war.” Hull was asked specifically whether this would include the problem of bringing evacuated European children to the Western Hemisphere and he said he believed it would.
Meanwhile, Dominican Minister Andres Pastoriza, calling on Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles, said the Dominican Republic planned to accept 5,000 European children under plans now being formulated, in addition to hundreds of refugees to be brought under the aegis of the Dominican Republic Settlement Association.
James N. Rosenberg, president of the D.R.S.A., conferred with British Ambassador Lord Lothian today in an effort to speed plans for bringing to the Sosua colony several hundred German refugees now in temporary safety in Britain. These would temporarily replace the refugees who had been selected for the Dominican colony but were unable to leave because of Italy’s entry into the war.
