Statute ‘dictated in Nazi Germany’

The Jewish Statute issued by the Vichy Government “can only have been dictated in Nazi Germany or devised by Frenchmen who seek to curry favor with their conquerors,” the New York Times said in an editorial yesterday deploring the action. The Times said the search for a scapegoat “is as old as defeat itself” and is “tragic and senseless” at all times.
