The Egyptian steamer Zamzam, carrying 180 Jewish passengers from Palestine to the United States, is en route to New York after stopping at Pernambuco, following a six-week trip by way of the Red Sea. The steamer is expected to reach the U.S. this weekend.
While passing through the Suez Canal the ship suffered a slight collision which resulted in the smashing of some of the lifeboats. An alarm was also sounded on the ship in the northern part of the Red Sea when a warship convoying the Zamzam opened fire with anti-aircraft artillery. The incident was later explained to the passengers as having been just practice. The steamer passed Italian-controlled North African territory without sighting one Italian vessel. Among the passengers on the Zamzam is Eri Jabotinsky, son of the late Zionist Revisionist leader.
