Expulsion of Jews from Vienna to Poland has been intensified with the object of completely ridding the city of its Jewish population of 40,000 before Reichsfuechrer Adolf Hitler’s birthday on April 20, according to informed travelers who arrived here today.
Baldur von Shirach, Provincial Governor of Vienna, was said to have promised “a Jewless Vienna for the Chief’s birthday.”
The Lublin Jewish “reservation” in Nazi-occupied Poland was reported to be the destination of a large number of the Jews being expelled. The first party to be transported to Poland was said to have numbered 1,100. In another transport, several Jews died of the intense cold while an route to Poland in unheated trains.
It was reported that Dr. Joseph Loewenherz, head of the Vienna Jewish Community, had been confined in the hospital, suffering from a nervous breakdown. Dr. Loewenherz had been devoting intensive efforts to arrange emigration of Jews from Vienna.
