United States Ambassador John G. Winant, at a press conference today for American correspondents, went out of his way to emphasize that he personally was responsible for choosing Benjamin V. Cohen as his legal counsellor. No questions had been asked at this point and it was Winant’s only unsolicited remark during the conference. It was presumed that the Ambassador intended his remark as a reply to Axis propaganda stating that President Roosevelt had chosen Cohen and that the appointment proved Roosevelt’s “close connections with the Jews.”
