The importance of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine was stressed by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Jewish Agency, addressing a meeting at the Harrington Hotel last night attended by about 100 persons.
Dr. Weizmann said a strong Jewish Palestine would be the best guarantee of a stable Near East and a rock of strength for the democracies in the battle to keep the Suez Canal open.
He leaves Washington tomorrow morning after a week in Washington during which he conferred with British Ambassador Lord Halifax, Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles and other Government leaders. He expressed satisfaction with the results of his conferences. He also saw William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor.
William Philip Simms, foreign editor of the Scripps-Howard newspapers, reported yesterday that information reaching Washington indicated that the Nazis would start a new drive towards the Near East and seek to occupy Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Transjordan and the Iraq oil fields.
