Ernest Mercier, famous French magnate, whom the Paris daily Le Matin, termed today as “half Jew”, was reported to be placed under “controlled freedom” by the authorities in Paris, it was reported here today.

Mercier, according to Le Matin, is the grandson of the Chief Rabbi of Constantine, Algeria, his mother having been the daughter of the Rabbi. He is reported in the French press as having had a controlling interest in twenty large French oil and electricity enterprises. His arrest is said to be connected with new measures enforced against “individuals dangerous to the public order.”
