The possible confiscation of Jewish property in unoccupied France was feared in Jewish circles here today following the publication of a decree providing for the establishment of five regional offices to deal with “economic aryanization” in the Free zone.
This measure, supplementing the demand that Jews, when filling out the forms of the present census, must give all possible details regarding their property and possessions, resulted in rumors being spread today that the Petain government intends to follow the Hitler policy of robbing the Jews of all their belongings. Efforts on the part of the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to secure confirmation of these rumors were unavailing.
The police in Paris today issued an order requesting all Jewish traveling salesmen as well as Jewish street peddlers to return their licences to police headquarters at once. Internment in a concentration camp is provided for those found guilty of not complying with the order.
