In a joint statement issued today by national chairmen Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, Jewish communities throughout the United States were summoned to observe the second anniversary of the outbreak of the present war on September 1st, by pledging themselves to help assure the survival of the Jewish people through renewed effort on behalf of the united Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine.

Rabbi Silver and Rabbi Wise declaring that since September, 1939, more then 5,000,000 Jews have fallen under Nazi domination, as a result of the invasion and conquest by Germany of some fourteen countries, stated. “During the past two years, which have witnessed the destruction of Jewish communities in almost every section of Europe, it has become increasingly evident that American Jewry must carry an ever-increasing share of the burden of sustaining the life and hope of Jews trapped under the Nazi regime, of providing for the defense and continued development of the Jewish Homeland in Palestine, and of making available the financial help necessary for adjusting refugees in the United States to the American way of life.”
