Regret over Edmund I. Kaufmann’s announcement that his health does not permit him to run for reelection to the post of president of the Zionist Organization of America and support for the candidacy of Judge Levinthal for the presidency was expressed in a statement issued here today by Dr. Solomon Goldman, former ZOA president. The statement reads:
“I learn with the deepest regret that Mr. E. I. Kaufmann, president of the Zionist Organization of America, has had to accept the opinion of his physician and not stand for reelection at the coming convention. I am sure that he would have been reelected with acclaim and that the Zionists throughout the country will miss his leadership the coming year.
“At the same time, I greet with enthusiasm Mr. Kaufmann’s recommendation of Judge Louis C. Levinthal of Philadelphia. I do not think that Mr. Kaufmann could have had a more worthy and distinguished successor. Judge Levinthal is a scion of an outstanding American Zionist family whose name is known to and revered by thousands of Jews throughout the land. Judge Levinthal brings to the office not only a judicial temperament, a deep loyalty to America and its democratic institution, but a thorough Jewish background and devotion to the rebuilding of Palestine.”
