43,000 Jews Still in Italy, Authorities Announce in Official Communique

Data on the number of Jews still residing in Italy, is published in today’s Italian press in the form of an official communique, indicating that Jews in the country are to expect developments which will affect their status in Italy.

“There were 45,410 Jews of Italian citizenship in the country on Jan. 1, 1932,” the communique says. “Jews of foreign citizenship in the kingdom on June 1, 1940, totaled 5,012. Of the Jews of Italian citizenship 5,966 had been definitely expatriated by Oct. 15, 1941. Of the foreign Jews, 1,338 were expatriated. Therefore, the total of expatriated Jews on Oct. 15, 1941, was 7,304. There are now in the United Kingdom 39,444 Jews with Italian citizenship, and 3,674 with foreign citizenship.”
