Admittedly disillusioned with the British Government’s recent refusal to consent to the formation of a Jewish Army in Palestine after months of negotiations and promises, the Zionist Organization of America today announced its intention of switching its fight from the diplomatic council table to an open appeal for public support.
While reaffirming Jewish support of the British war effort, Judge Louis E. Leventhal, Z.O.A. President, told a press conference the appeal for an end to the discrimination against Palestine soldiers “is the dictate of honor which must be heeded.” Other speakers were Emanuel Neumann and Simon Shetzer, the Z.O.A.’s Executive Director.
“As Zionists and Americans and as true friends of Britain, it would be contrary to every sense of decency to maintain silence when an injustice is perpetrated which works injury not only to our cause, but to the cause of democracy as well,” Judge Jewish volunteers to fight under the Star of David – shortage of equipment, lack of shipping facilities and fear of Moslem resentment in the Near East – were denounced as “eyewash” by Neumann.
