The introduction of food ration cards in Palestine as a means of combatting profiteering and ever-increasing prices, was proposed today by the mayors of the four largest cities in Palestine at a conference with Sir Harold MacMichael, High Commissioner.
The mayors of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Jaffa and Haifa submitted a memorandum embodying their suggestions on the problem of supplies. The High Commissioner assured them that at present the government had prepared a sufficient stock of essential goods and that more shipments were expected soon. He promised to consider the request for ration cards and stated that he would be happy to meet with the mayors, who have banded together in a “Mayors’ Conference,” at any time on the question of supplies.
