Jews in Berlin Ordered to Surrender Their Winter Clothing; Deportations Resumed

All Jews in Berlin were ordered this week to surrender within 24 hours their winter clothing, including furs, muffs, boots, woolen articles and blankets, for shipment to the German army on the Soviet front, it was reported here today from Berlin by the correspondent of the Bund, a Swiss daily newspaper.

The report, which passed German censorship, says the order was issued on Wednesday. On Thursday Jews shivering from cold were standing in long lines in front of six receiving stations delivering their last pieces of warn clothing. Skis and Ski-shoes were also turned in by them as requested. All articles at some future time as has been the practice with “Aryan” civilians who surrendered warm clothing for the use of the army.

The order requesting the Jews to turn in winter apparel specified that the articles must be delivered in a clean condition and must contain no notes or letters in their pockets, nor any tags with the names of the owner.

Simultaneously, it was reported today from Berlin that the mass-expulsion of Jews from Germany to Nazi-held Poland and Ukraine has been resumed. The Jews in Berlin, themselves deprived of many foodstuffs, are sharing their food by each contributing part of his rationed bread and margarine to the groups of departed Jews who are not provided with food by the Nazi authorities, the report said.
