Acting on a plea by local Jewish leaders, the Government of Uruguay has decided to reverse a recent decree and will permit the use of the Jewish language in the radio and the press as well as the languages of nations at war with the Axis powers, it was announced here today.
In making this announcement, a Government spokesman informed the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that representations on the part of the Jewish Community in Uruguay were chiefly responsible for the Government’s decision to modify the original decree which prohibited foreign-language broadcasts and the publication of foreign-language newspapers. “It would have been unjust to silence the democratic elements in our country in our attempt to stop anti-democratic propaganda,” the Government spokesman said. The original ban, which was aimed chiefly at pro-Axis agitation, remains in force for the German, Italian and Japanese languages.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
