Opposition to the creation of a Jewish army in Palestine was voiced today by Ali Jawdat, Iraqian minister to the United States, in an interview appearing in the Washington Star. Disclaiming any anti-Jewish prejudice, the first accredited envoy to this country from an Arab nation charged that the attempt of Jews in America and Britain to secure a Jewish military force in Palestine is dangerous to the cause of the Allies because formation of such an army would confirm Axis claims that an Allied victory would result in Arabia being turned over to the Jews.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Monday, Rep. Thomas D’Alesandro of Baltimore urged Congress to use its influence to obtain the formation of a Jewish army composed of Palestinian and stateless Jews. Describing examples of Jewish heroism down through the ages, Rep. D’Alesandro stated that the “American Jew in this world-wide conflict is displaying the same courage, loyalty and heroism that his forefathers displayed in every conflict since the Revolutionary war.” He added that “the badge of courage was won by Jewish soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor and in every subsequent engagement.” The Maryland Congressman, who is a member of the Committee for a Jewish Army, predicted that “before many months have passed, the Jewish army, composed of stateless and Palestine Jews, will be a reality” and will be ready to meet the Axis armies if they break through to Palestine.
