Zionists Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Congressional Resolution on Palestine

The twentieth anniversary of the adoption by both Houses of Congress of the Joint Resolution favoring the establishment of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine was celebrated today by Zionist groups throughout the country. It was on June 30, 1922 that the House of Representatives adopted the resolution which had been passed in the Senate on May 3, 1922.

In a statement issued here today, Judge Louis E. Levinthal, president of the Zionist Organization of America, declared: “The observance of the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of this Resolution is considered of special significance at this time when the United States, as the leading member of the United Nations, is engaged in a struggle for the liberation of all oppressed people and for the establishment of a just and righteous world order. It is estimated that at the end of the war at least three million Jews in Europe will remain homeless. Palestine alone will be able to absorb and offer them a permanent home. There can be no just peace without the solution of the Jewish problem through the restoration of Palestine as the Jewish Homeland.” Judge Leventhal’s statement further points out that every President since Wilson has voiced his endorsement of the Jewish Homeland.

In connection with the anniversary, statements were issued here today by several Congressmen. Cong. Samuel Dickstein, Democrat, of New York, stressed the role Palestine has played during the last twenty years in settling Jews fleeing from persecution in Europe. Discussing the fact that Palestine is now menaced by the Nazi army which has penetrated deep into Egypt, he expressed regret that a Jewish army has not been created, but urged continuance of the fight to secure such a force. Rep. Herman P. Koppleman, Democrat, of Connecticut, stated that “at this time, when the sufferings and aspirations of the Jewish people are overshadowed by the agonies and hopes of the entire world, it is fortunate that we should have occasion to recall that the American people have declared themselves in favor of a Jewish national home in Palestine.”
