The Federal Bureau of Investigation today disclosed that in its week-long search among the 942 passengers of the refugee liner Drottningholm, it found a Nazi spy, Karl Friedrich Bahr, who came here aboard the mercy ship posing as a Jewish refugee.
A naturalized American citizen, Bahr returned to Germany in 1938 to attend an espionage school, the FBI stated. He returned equipped with $7,000 with which, the FBI believes, he was supposed to set up a system of espionage in America. Arrangements had been made for him to send back secret messages, written in invisible ink on the backs of ordinary letters.
Bahr was born in 1913 and came to the United States in 1926. He was a student in Buffalo and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from where he was graduated in 1938, just before his return to Germany to attend the school for spies, the FBI established.
