The mass-arrests of Jews in France, which began in Paris last week, has spread to the unoccupied zone, according to a Berlin broadcast heard here today.
The Nazi broadcaster disclosed that 20,000 of the seized Jews are being held in a camp at Velodrome d’Hiver, a bicycle track near Paris. He reiterated that these Jews would be deported to Poland.
Only women expecting early confinements, nursing mothers and war widows are being spared so far, the broadcast stated. Children of arrested parents are being turned over to the child-caring agencies of the Union of Israelites in France, which was founded last year by the then Commissar for Jewish Affairs Xavier Vallat when he dissolved all existing Jewish organizations in the country.
