Alderman Sir Samuel Joseph today was elected Lord Mayor of London for the coming year, giving this city its first Jewish Lord Mayor since Lord Bearsted, some forty years ago. He will take office in November.

Sir Samuel is a prominent businessman and public figure here. He was sheriff of the City of London during 1933-34. He served in the last war and was retired with the rank of captain. Since it is the usual practice for the Lord Mayor to choose his own chaplain, it is expected that Sir Samuel will name a prominent London rabbi to the post.
