About 53,000 Austrian Jews have been killed as a result of Hitler’s invasion of Austria, it was stated by Archduke Otto, pretender to the throne of Austria, speaking before the National Council of Jewish Women.

Expressing his sympathy with the plight of the hundreds of Austrian Jewish refugees who have been handed over to Hitler by Vichy, the Archduke said that “we Austrians believe that before God and the Nation all men are equal. We make no racial or religious distinctions.” In concluding, Otto declared that he was optimistic with regard to the status of Jews in a reconstructed Europe.
