The number of Jewish men on active service in the Canadian Army now totals 8,500, according to a statement released today by H.M. Caiserman, national secretary of the Canadian Jewish Congress. “Canadian Jews compose 1.4 percent of the population,” Mr. Caiserman stated, “but enlistments of Jews in the army, navy and the air force since war’s outbreak now exceed that ratio when compared with total enlistments in the armed forces.”

“The total number of Jewish casualties at Dieppe has been raised to 21, of whom 7 are killed, 7 missing, one was wounded and 6 are prisoners of war,” he added. “A number of Jewish soldiers have been with the Hong Kong expedition and are known to be prisoners of war. The casualty lists of the Royal Canadian Air Force contain the names of many Jewish boys who have been killed in action or are missing after air operations.”
