A round-up of Jews in Marseille on the pretext that their presence in that important harbor city interferes with Nazi military plans was reported today over the Vichy radio.
Thousands of Jews, as well as non-Jews, suspected of activities “favoring the enemy” have been arrested during the week-end and sent to concentration camps, the broadcast said. Jews are henceforth forbidden to reside in the harbor area, under a special order issued yesterday by the German military authorities.
Other reports reaching here today from France said that churches of all faiths, in defiance of Nazi occupation authorities and Vichy’s anti-Semitic decrees, are continuing to hide and feed Jews threatened with deportation to concentration camps.
