The British consul-general in Tangier, Spanish Morocco, has protested to the military governor of the city against the flogging and deportation this past week-end of 100 Jewish and Arab youths who were arrested when they went to the French consulate there to volunteer for labor service in French North Africa.
Announcing the protest, the British Foreign Office stated that the governor, General Uriarte, has promised an immediate investigation. It is understood here that if the results of his investigation are unsatisfactory, British Ambassador Sir Samuel Hoare will make direct representations to the Spanish Government at Madrid. When the youths were arrested, the Tangier police admitted that they were being punished for volunteering to work in Allied instead of Axis territory.
