All Hungarian Jews residing in towns of less than 10,000 population will be deported to larger cities where they will be confined in ghettos, it was reported today by the budapest radio. The broadcast said that the German-controlled Hungarian Government had issued a decree authorizing such evacuations and providing for the confiscation of the homes of the ousted Jews.
The Stockholm Tidningen reports that special reduced rations have been announced for Jews throughout Hungary. Jews will be permitted to buy only one-quarter of a pound of beef or horse meat and three ounces of sugar weekly. They are forbidden to purchase butter, eggs, rice or other meats. Swedish newspapers also report that three Jewish newspapers have been shut down in Budapest. They are a well known art magazine, “Mult es Jovoe,” (“Past and Future”) and two publications of the Jewish community council.
The Hungarian pro-Nazi press received here states that the expulsion of the Jews from larger towns in the Carpathian section of the country has revealed that many Jews from Nazi-occupied Poland had succeeded in crossing the Polish-Hungarian frontier into Hungary and were being sheltered by Jews in Munkaez, Ungvar, Beregszasz and Marmaros. They have all been deported to an unknown destination, the papers add.
