An indication that the Vichy regime in France would consider exchanging French Jews for members of the Vichy Phalange Africaine who have been arrested by the French Committee of National Liberation in Algiers, is given in the newspaper L’Appel reaching here today from France.
An article suggesting such an exchange is carried by the French newspaper under the signature of Pierre Constantini. The article coincides with the execution in Algiers today of Col. Pierre Cristofini who was convicted of treason as commander of the Phalange Africaine, which was organized to fight the Allied landing in North Arica.
The French newspaper L’Oeuvre reports that there are still about 200,000 Jews in France. It suggests that they all be used for forced labor. L’Appel demands, however, that Jews be assigned to forced labor in mines and quarries only, and not to agricultural labor. “The harvest must not be sullied by Jewish hands,” L’Appel writes.
