Pro-Nazi newspapers in Hungary have started a campaign for the mobilization of all school teachers to conduct anti-Jewish propaganda to “enlighten” the Hungarian population concerning the “advantages” which the monition of Jews from economic life will bring to every non-Jew in the country.
The newspapers continue to complain that not only do many Hungarians disapprove the anti-Jewish measures, but they even go so far as to help the Jews evade##se measures. In the city of Kosice, one paper reports, the police arrested a number of Hungarians who attempted to smuggle food into the ghetto. In Satoral-Jaujhely non-Jews were interned for not informing the local authorities regarding Jewish property which they had concealed. In Satu-Mare a large number of non-Jews applied the local orphans office for permission to adopt Jewish children.
All these and similar facts give the anti-Jewish officials ground to believe that “the treason of favoring Jews at the expense of the Hungarian race occurs daily” and that many Hungarians “are still not imbued with racial consciousness,” the paper Quotes. It quotes high Hungarian officials as stating that the people of Hungary must made to understand that “the elimination of Jews offers great opportunities for the country.”
