Reliable information reaching here today from Budapest reveals that Hungarian authorities, cooperating with the Gestapo, resumed the mass-deportations of Jews from Hungary immediately after it became known that Rumania joined the Allies and turned against Germany and Hungary.
Cattle trains loaded with Jews were again leaving Hungary to “unknown destinations” during the last few days, despite the promise given by Regent Horthy of Hungary to King Gustaf of Sweden that Jews would no longer be deported from the country, a report received here says. Various sections of the Hungarian administration are now working against each other, but the Gestapo exerts the determining influence, the report added.
The Swedish Government, perturbed by this report, indicated today that it intends to send a special delegate to Budapest in an effort to halt the renewed deportations of Jews. Prominent Hungarian Jews reaching Stockholm, however, entertain doubts as to whether the efforts of the Swedish Government will have any success.
(The Hungarian Information Office in New York today released a cable from its London representative confirming the report that the deportation of Jews from Hungary has been resumed. “It is not true that those deportations are being carried out only by the Germans,” the cable said. “The Hungarian authorities and the gendarmes are arresting Jews in Budapest for deportation.”)
