Vatican authorities have refused the request of Palestine’s chief rabbis for an audience with the Pope to discuss measures to save the Jews of Hungary, according to a Jerusalem dispatch appearing in the London Jewish Chronicle today.
A Vatican spokesman said that all measures suggested by the chief rabbis have already been carried out and nothing further can be achieved at an interview with the Pope. They added that a papal legate will visit Palestine shortly, at which time the rabbis will have a further opportunity to discuss the Vatican’s role in rescuing the Jews.
The paper also reports that the steamer Bella Citta, which was planning to leave Constanza with 150 Jewish children bound for Palestine, has been held up as a result of war developments in Rumania. A Turkish vessel named the Smyrna is also awaiting an opportunity to leave Rumania with 2,000 to 3,000 refugees, the report adds.
