Acting Premier Francis M. Forde announced today that the Australian Government has rejected the proposal to set aside a large tract in Kimberly, in western Australia, for the post-war settlement of refugee Jews.
(Informed of the announcement by Acting Premier fords, Dr. I. N. Steinberg, head of the Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonization, and the “father” of the plan for a Jewish settlement in Kimberly, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he did not believe that this was a final decision.
(In a statement given by telephone from Montreal, Dr. Steinberg said that he had not been informed of any action by the Australian Government, although he knew that the Kimberly project was under consideration. He added that from the information available at present, it was difficult to ascertain whether the whole idea of Jewish colonization in Kimberly had been rejected, or only the settlement plan as now formulated.)
