The battle to obtain a Jewish homeland in Palestine is not merely to decide whether the Zionist ideal will prevail or whether the Jews will be re-established there, or even whether a haven will be provided for refugees, but to decide whether the whole of humanity is to benefit from the great gifts of the Jewish spirit, Vice Premier Jan Hofmeyer said here, addressing a meeting to launch a drive in South Africa for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
The Vice Premier added that he supported Zionism not merely for reasons of justice, but because he saw there in an enrichment of humanity, and because he looked toward a Jewish Palestine to inaugurate a new chapter in the annuls of the human spirit. The Hebrew University, he continued, is the supreme intellectual achievement of Zionism, and guarantees the revival of the Jewish genius, which in the past has placed humanity in debt.
Prof. Leon Mayer, rector of the Hebrew University, and Dr. Werner Senator, the institution’s administrator, outlined the school’s development and its plans for expansion. More than 27,000 pounds were pledged at the meeting.
