The charge that the British Government has brolenits promise made in the 1939 White Paper was made tonight by Dr. Hussein Khalidi, leader of the Palestine Arab Reform Party and a member of the Arab delegation to which John V. H. Shaw, Acting High Commissioner, communicated Foreign Minister Bevin’s announcement of a joint Anglo-American inquiry into the Palestine problem.
“The least I can say is that we are disappointed,” Khalidi declared. “I accuse the British Government of having broken the promise made in the White Paper. It seems to me that the ultimate aim of the new policy is the creation of a Jewish state. The fact that no constitutional changes are announced is clear proof of this. It is now up to the Arab League to speak with a united voice.”
From Cairo it was reported that Egyptian and Arab leaders there are disappointed by Bevin’s statement, although no official comment has been made.
Heads of delegations to the Arab League will meet in Cairo tomorrow afternoon to discuss the statement, which has been sent by the British Government to all Arab states with an accompanying note.
