Washington Jews Start Drive for Children’s Village Honoring George Washington

A national campaign to establish a Jewish children’s village in Palestine, honoring the memory of George Washington, was under- way today, led by the “Washington Colony in the Holy Land, Inc.,” organization. When completed the village will provide homes and schooling for several hundred Jewish orphans from Europe, who will be trained as farmers or craftsmen, in modern agricultural and trades schools.

The Washington Children’s Village will be located near Yavneh, about 25 miles due south of Tel Aviv and operations of the project are soheduled to begin on Washington’s birthday, Feb. 22, 1946, with the laying of the cornerstone of the first building. The first remittance of $50,000 will go to Jerusalem next week to begin building operations. Rebbi Zomach Green of the Ohev Sholem Congregation in Washington, D.C., is the founder and president of the organization.
